We're living in an era where one of our main struggles and points of potential strength is unity - אחדות.

In the opening of this week's parsha, Moshe subtly rebukes the Jewish people by mentioning names of their travels that allude to particular sins committed whilst in the desert, one of which was "חצרות".

Rashi tells us this is an allusion to מחלוקותו של קורח.

How exactly is the word חצרות (courtyards) a hint toward Korach?

The Chiddushei Hari"m offers us a penetrating insight.

Every Jew lives in their own home and every group of homes surrounds their own separate courtyard, there is a division and on Shabbat we can't carry from one to another.

Here enters the mitzvah of עירובי חצרות. With a kzayit of bread collected from each one, the courtyards are considered one domain and all are allowed to enter and exit, carrying in and out.

This is our mission, to acknowledge that every Jew or group of Jews has their own courtyard, but we still identify ourselves as one, with open communication and interaction.

It was Korach who sought to destroy this with division, as he cancelled the unity, this left חצרות, divided courtyards with no interaction between them.

Moshe sought out open communication and he survived, Korach was not interested and he was destroyed.

For unity, you don't have to move into someone else's courtyard, but you do have to acknowledge that we're working together for a greater good.
